Pack Light, Live Large

When you live at the beach, what better way to spend Spring Break than with some Swintertime Fun in Mammoth Lakes?

Whether you're planning a to hit the slopes or simply want to experience the magic of a winter wonderland before the snow melts away and while the sun is (usually) shining, the key to a smooth and enjoyable Eastern Sierra trip is to expect the unexpected and pack for the unpredictable.

Here's a comprehensive guide on how to pack for a spring family trip to a snowy location:

1. Layer Up:

The key to staying warm and comfortable in a snowy destination is layering. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from the skin. Merino wool or synthetic materials are excellent choices for this purpose. Next, add an insulating layer such as a fleece or down jacket to trap heat close to the body. Finally, top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer layer to shield against the elements. The top waterproof layer is vital if you're planning snow sports like sledding, skiing, or scenic walks in snowy areas.

Make sure each family member has enough layers to adjust to changing temperatures throughout the day. Additionally, packing extra socks, gloves, and hats is essential as these items tend to get wet or misplaced easily.

Layering is expecially important for young kiddos, who tend to have a harder time regularting their body temps.

2. Winter Accessories:

Don't forget to pack winter accessories to protect exposed extremities from the cold. This includes items such as scarves, beanies, earmuffs, and neck gaiters. Sunglasses with UV protection are also important, as snow reflects sunlight and can cause glare that strains the eyes.

For children, consider bringing along fun and colorful accessories to keep them excited about dressing appropriately for the weather.

3. Quality Footwear:

Proper footwear is crucial when navigating snowy terrain. Insulated, waterproof boots with good traction are essential to keep feet warm, dry, and secure. Look for boots that are rated for the expected temperatures at your destination, and ensure they have enough room for wearing thick socks comfortably.

For toddlers and younger children, opt for softer boots with easy closures such as Velcro or zipper fastenings to simplify dressing.

4. Winter Gear:

If you plan on skiing, snowboarding, or sledding, don't forget to pack the necessary safety gear. This includes helmets, goggles, ski pants, jackets, and gloves. Renting equipment at the destination is an option, but bringing your own gear ensures proper fit and gear that is comfortable so kids will tolerate it better.

For families with young children, consider renting or purchasing a sled to enjoy some snowy fun together. But be sure to use safety gear like helmets, when sledding. Avoid sledding close to trees, roads, large boulders, buildings, and other hazards.

5. Medications and First Aid:

Be prepared for any unexpected illnesses or injuries by packing a basic first aid kit. Include items such as adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any prescription medications your family members may need. Additionally, don't forget to pack sunscreen with a high SPF to protect against sunburn, as UV rays can be particularly intense at high altitudes and when reflected off snow. If you forget these items, they can be purchased at Rite Aid, or Von's. Grovery Outlet also has some options.

6. Entertainment and Comfort Items:

Long journeys and downtime in snowy destinations can be more enjoyable with entertainment and comfort items. Pack books, games, or electronic devices loaded with movies or games to keep children entertained during travel, bad weather, and quiet moments indoors. Don't forget to bring along favorite snacks, hot cocoa mix, or tea bags to enjoy cozy evenings in your accommodation. If you find yourself in need of toys and games, feel free to check our selection of board games and kids' toys. Some limited toys and kids' books are available at Rite Aid, Vons, and the Booky Joint. We can also pick up and deliver any groceries or other items you need.

7. Essentials:

Pack essentials such as chargers, power banks, and a portable Wi-Fi hotspot to stay connected during your trip.

Since Mammoth is such a small town, with only one grocery store, it is also a good idea to bring any specific food items you need, or place an order in advance at Vons and we can pick up and delivery prior to your arrival.

By following these tips and packing strategically, your family can make the most of a spring trip to a snowy destination. Embrace the adventure, and create lasting memories amidst the winter wonderland.
